First Friday Art Exhibit at the BQC Center

  • BQC Center 310 West Champion Street Bellingham, WA, 98225 United States (map)

Each month, we showcase the work of a local queer artist by hosting a reception during the Downtown Bellingham Partnership’s First Friday Art Walk, and then displaying their work on the walls of the BQC Center in a month-long exhibition.

We’re celebrating the work of local artist Crystle Loomos this month! Join us for a reception during the First Friday Art Walk on November 6, 6-8:30 PM.  Crystle will be at the event to chat with guests and her work will be displayed at the Center through the end of the month.

Crystle is a 37 year old queer Latina who was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but hopes you will consider her a local after living here for almost a quarter of a century. She currently lives in Blaine with her family, cat, expansive book collection, garden, and tons of half-finished art projects that she was “just getting to”.

Coming from a family of musicians, seamstresses, wood workers, and visual artists, Crystle has been encouraged to dabble in many different art forms since childhood. She's been a photographer, musician, dancer, fashion designer, jewelry maker, graphic designer and more. As an avid DIYer, she's self-taught about many things through YouTube tutorials and good old-fashioned experimentation. Over the years, she's taken many art and dance classes both in college and in the community. Crystle is a first-gen college grad with a Bachelor's in Human Services from WWU.

Crystle’s medium of the moment is mixed media collage with acrylic pour paints on canvas.

Artist’s statement:

This series explores Jungian modes of art through acrylic pour mediums on canvas layered with elements of collage. Jungian art deals in archetypes, visualizations from the unconscious and “process over aesthetics”.

Join me as I utilize religious themes, mythology, flora and fauna with playful use of color, texture and composition. Each canvas is like an I Spy meets a Rorschach test. Searching for just the right cutout to sneak into a piece scratches a deep itch in my brain. Did you find the hidden meaning beneath the layers of paint, paper, glue, and glitter? Perhaps there isn't any meaning deeper than, "I'm learning AND having fun in the process!" You decide.
