Why Reminder Day? In 1965, 40 gay and lesbian held the first Reminder Day demonstration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, symbolically held in front of Independence Hall, meant to draw attention to the civil rights still due to the LGBT community. This was one of the first organized demonstrations for gay rights in the world and continued until July 4, 1969, a few days after Stonewall. We are still fighting for transgender/queer rights in our country and many of us feel like July 4 is a time to make others aware of the inequities our government is allowing and endorsing.
Many of us do not celebrate holidays in the same way that mainstream culture encourages us to do. That is why the BQC holds events on holidays for our community.
The BQC rented the use of the newly constructed Wheelhouse at the Community Boating Center (CBC) for our first annual Reminder Day event last year too. This is an accessible space with an elevator to the upstairs event space. There are individual restrooms with showers downstairs.
Volunteers needed. We will send an email out through Civic Champs for sign up!
