COMMUNITY EVENT: Wild Whatcom Out and About

Out and About is a monthly nature program for queer adults (18+). Join us for Queer Critters | Saturday, September 19, 2026 |  3:00-5:00PM

Did you know that thousands of species have been observed participating in “queer” behaviors, such as same-sex coupling, changing sexes, and even raising offspring with same-sex partners. From gay swan foster dads to matriarchal hawk families and asexually reproducing lizards, animals around the world exist, and thrive, outside of the heteronormative expectations we often project onto them. Join us to explore how queerness is a natural and beautiful aspect of life for countless organisms!

COMMUNITY EVENT: Wild Whatcom Out and About

Out and About is a monthly nature program for queer adults (18+). Join us for Creatures of the Night: Halloween Night Prowl | Friday, October 30, 2026 |  5:00-7:00PM

Wear your best costume to explore at night and learn all about nocturnal creatures. If you dress as a nocturnal animal yourself, you might even get some extra candy! We will start with some silly activities to build community, then have an interactive discussion about nocturnal animals and the unique adaptations which help them thrive in the darkness. We will then go on our “night prowl” (walking around flat trails as the sun sets) to keep our eyes and ears open for nocturnal wildlife. The area we will be exploring has abundant birds (including owls), as well as beavers, muskrats, bats, and coyotes! Come ready to have fun in the darkness, make new friends, and appreciate all things spooky with other nature loving queer folks!

Have you ever wondered about how mushrooms grow so fast after the rain, or why dead trees always seem to be covered in fungus? Join us to learn all about mycelium-the hidden network of tiny fungal threads which are typically found underground! We will explore the often unseen ways that mushrooms impact the world around us, from breaking down dead stuff to providing food to countless animals around the world, including us! Nature is full of relationships which are often hidden and easy to miss if you don’t look closely… so we will explore slowly and carefully, searching for cool mushrooms as well as any other neat flora and fauna we might spot!

COMMUNITY EVENT: Wild Whatcom Out and About

Out and About is a monthly nature program for queer adults (18+). Join us for Finding Our Light Queer Campfire | Saturday, December 12, 2026 |  4:30-6:30PM

With the darkest day of the year, the winter solstice, just around the corner, join us for a healing time outdoors as we reflect on our year, set intentions for the new year ahead. After thinking about the ways that plants and animals get through the coldest months, we will open the floor to share the things that help us each get through the darkest parts of winter. The holidays can be a complicated time for many queer folks, and this is a space to build local community by sharing thoughts, feelings, and food with new friends! We will bring some snacks to share and “break bread” as a community, but if you’d like to bring a favorite food, whether store bought or home-made, the more the better!
